This Picture illustrates the ideal relationship between buildings and the street, that makes for a pedestrian friendly environment.

This is a great idea, along with your amendment to the OCP you should try and incorporate your own design of what downtown might look like. It would be very helpful for people to be able to visualize what some of the downtown streets could be made into. Pictures are worth a thousand words!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sean,I agree pictures are worth a thousand words.
DeleteBeing a visual person myself I think that would be a good idea that I will look into. Is there any particular change you would like to be see in the downtown core?
I agree with Sean. Having your own design specific to downtown Kamloops would be ideal. The spacing for the existing buildings will not allow for the same type of design as Karri has shown in her sketch.
ReplyDeleteI like Pacman as much as anyone else, but having this game on your blog detracts from the professionalism.
Brent thanks for that link, I though I had read that one but I was mistaken. The Public realm stuff isn't exactly practical but I still think you can adopt certain aspects to impact your project in a positive way. I was looking for stuff for my project and was reading through an article you might want to check out, its all about Urban infill.

i like the idea of including green space into the urban environment, i personally would like to see more utilization of this in kamloops. i traveled to Miami about 2 years ago and what i loved about the downtown area was that they had streets that were designed just for walking, and the roads for travel ran perpendicular to the walking streets. the walking streets created a vibrant outdoor meeting area for people full of plants, trees, fountains, benches, and restaurant patios. i would love to see a plan of kamloops that could use this development idea.
ReplyDeleteThat would be a great improvement to the city of Kamloops, however I think that if you were to create pedestrian streets from existing local roads the public of Kamloops would be somewhat unhappy. The way access is designed downtown it is a cohesive unit and changing one aspect can throw the system out of link. On the other side I believe that if that was introduced in a new neibourhood where it could be deigned to accommodate such a thing from the beginning it would be a great idea.
DeleteThis is a cool concept, but I wonder how it would affect the interaction of the different vehicles at intersections. Many accidents already occur when vehicles forget to check the bike lane when turning. Adding the vegetation in between creates a visual barrier between each of the lanes, which could increase the risk of accidents. For either the busses or the cyclists on the outermost lanes it also creates several lanes of traffic to check and cross when turning. Just food for thought.
